Software Internals Book Club

I run a small email book club featuring books of the highest caliber that we might otherwise be intimidated into reading on our own; Topics are typically covered in databases, distributed systems, and software performance.

We are currently reading Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces.

There are over 2,500 members from around the world and between 300-800 members join for any given book. Members include undergraduates, graduate students, early-career programmers, experienced programmers, founders, and everyone in between. Anyone interested is welcome to join.

I always strive to find interesting and experienced discussion leaders from diverse backgrounds who help make the discussions the most valuable part of the club, even beyond the books.

Sign up here to stay in the loop.

how it works

All discussion takes place through Google Groups. There will be no Zoom or Google Hangouts, it will be all text email.

Each weekend, one person will send an email recapping the chapter or asking questions to spark discussion. It can be as short as a paragraph or two to get the discussion going. Later someone else can also raise his voice.

I would request these chapter discussion leaders before starting each new book.

loose criteria

The focus is on books that will be interesting and useful to seniors + developers (whatever that means for you), though anyone is welcome.

  • between 350-550 pages
  • Focused on a specific software topic, not on the philosophy of software in general
  • generally not textbooks
  • Can be completed in about 3 months by reading 1-2 chapters per week

Possible future books

Do you have a book that meets the above criteria? tell me!
