Tesla has settled another lawsuit involving a death related to one of its driver assistance systems. As first reported bloombergThe lawsuit revolving around the death of 71-year-old Johanna Story in Arizona has been settled, but terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
Story’s family filed a lawsuit against Tesla in 2023, following an incident where the grandmother got out of her car to direct traffic around a separate collision caused by sun glare. Story was then struck and killed by a Model Y that was using full self-driving. Notably, this case was the first reported incident of pedestrian death related to Tesla’s automated driving technology. In addition to the lawsuit, the accident led to a federal investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which examined how Full Self-Driving operated in poor visibility conditions.
Unlike most other incidents involving Tesla’s driver assistance features, the lawsuit targets Full Self-Driving, which has since been changed to Full Self-Driving (Supervised). In the past, its past Autopilot feature has been mentioned in other legal actions filed against Tesla, such as the lawsuit involving a Model Tesla has since settled that lawsuit with the victim’s family. However, Tesla is facing a new lawsuit this month from the family of a Model 3 driver and a woman killed in a crash involving the alleged use of “an automated driving assistance system.”
