The Steam Controller has been a hot topic for the PC gaming world for the past few weeks, and a new news may keep the conversation going: Valve released CAD files for the gamepad’s shell. They’re free to download under a Creative Commons license, meaning people can now design and build their own accessories for the Steam Controller and its pucks.
The files are only for the external part of the device; You won’t be able to 3D print your own to create your entire controller from scratch. This means that if you’re looking for a Steam controller, you may have to wait a bit until the sold-out gamepads come back in stock. Fortunately, since Valve hasn’t given a release window for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset yet, it’s probably not an essential purchase at this time for most gamers. But it’s a nice controller if you can find one, and it’s a good idea for Valve to let people be creative with the casing.
