Even the domestically made Polestar 3 SUV cannot be sold.
Even though it makes an electric SUV in the US, Polestar will effectively be out of the local market next year. According to the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, the brand will not be allowed to sell new models in the country from 2027. carscoops.
The agency’s decision falls under the Connected Vehicle Rule, which bans selling cars with software or hardware from China or Russia due to national security concerns. Unless manufacturers get authorization to sell stateside, the software block will begin in 2027 and hardware won’t be allowed until 2030. Polestar is majority-owned by China-based brand Geely and has not been granted that approval.
It’s a tough break, especially since the company moved production of its Polestar 3 models to South Carolina in 2024 to avoid tariffs on EVs imported from China. Deliveries of those EVs began in the US the same year. It’s unclear whether Polestar will continue production in the US or move it elsewhere in response to the regulatory change. Interestingly, sister brand Volvo has the same owner and has received authorization for US sales.
