Shokz’s New Clip-On Wireless Earbuds Focus on ‘Premium Sound’

Shox is expanding its lineup of solid open-style wireless earbuds. The company recently introduced the OpenDots 2 as well as the OpenDots Air, both of which are clip-style open wireless earbuds.

The $199 OpenDots 2 are the flagship pair, and according to Shoxz, they emphasize premium sound along with extra bass. They have two 11.8 mm drivers and redesigned acoustics to reduce distortion. They also have “upgraded” Dolby Atmos audio compared to the previous generation.

On top of those audio upgrades, they come with an improved version of the company’s MirrorPitch technology, which bends sound toward your ears instead of spreading it out into the open air, as well as BassFire 2.0, which is a ShockZ-specific driver architecture meant to boost bass and make 11.8mm drivers sound more like 16mm drivers. The result, according to Showcase, is a pair of clip-on wireless earbuds with solid low end (often a weak point for wireless earbuds in this genre) and flagship-level sound.

Like most clip-on wireless earbuds, the battery life of the OpenDots 2 is solid, with 10 hours of life in the buds and 40 hours of total charge with the case. One benefit of not having noise cancellation like other non-open wireless earbuds or noise reduction like the Shox OpenFit Pro is the longer battery life. Calling should also be improved on the OpenDots 2, with Showcase adding two bone-conduction microphones that help reduce wind noise. Colors include black, gray and pearl white.

The Opendots Air is slightly cheaper at $129 but still comes with the same dual 11.8mm drivers. They are technically lighter than Opendots 2, but by a very small margin. The OpenDots 2 is 6.4 grams and the OpenDots Air is 6.3 grams. I don’t think you are able to notice the difference here, but maybe you are used to your ears that way. Although they have the same drivers as the OpenDots 2, the OpenDots Air doesn’t have the same upgrades as Basssphere or Dolby Atmos, and battery life is a little worse at 9 hours per charge instead of 10.

However, there is one thing these wireless earbuds don’t have on the OpenDots 2, which is purple color: The OpenDots Air will be available in black and “Daybreak Purple” colors. Both pairs are available now.
