Google just introduced a new smart home speaker yesterday, but the arrival of one new product heralds the end of others. The company has confirmed that it will stop production of the Nest Home Mini and Nest Audio. These Nest devices have been on the market for about five years (or longer, if you count 2017’s Google Home Mini) and it seems logical for Google to prioritize the new generation, given its current strategy of placing its Gemini chatbot everywhere it possibly can.
Although speaker pairing has been turned off, either of the two smart home products will remain on. “Existing Nest Mini and Nest Audio devices will remain fully supported with regular software updates, security patches, and customer service,” a Google representative told Engadget. The new Google Home speaker costs $100, which is about the same as the existing Nest Audio, but significantly more than the Nest Home Mini, which costs $50 and can often be found for cheaper.
