Windows 11 tests an adjustable taskbar and resizable Start menu

Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 test will allow you to change the position of the taskbar and change the size of the Start menu. The update, which is being rolled out to Windows 11 Insiders in the Experimental Channel, lets you place the taskbar at the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen.

Microsoft first teased its movable taskbar in March as part of efforts to restore trust among users. You can adjust the alignment of icons inside the taskbar, as well as open the Start menu drawer from wherever you placed it. Windows 11 Insiders can also access a smaller taskbar, which may come in handy for devices with smaller displays. There is also an option to choose from the “Small” or “Large” Start menu.

The layout of the Start menu will soon be easier to adjust, with new toggles that will allow you to show or hide the “Pinned”, “Recommended” and “All” sections. The company is renaming the “Recommended” section to “Recent” to “better reflect what the section primarily shows, including recently installed apps and recently used files.” You can also now hide your name and profile picture from the Start menu if you’re sharing your screen or making a presentation.

These features are rolling out to the experimental channel in the “coming weeks.” “We’ve talked about earning trust through steady and visible progress,” Diego Baca, Microsoft’s design director, says in the blog post. “Whenever you sit down at your PC, Start and the taskbar are where that trust is most tested.”
