In total, 10 cases have been reported: seven cases who became ill on the ship, one case who disembarked from the ship on April 24, before the outbreak was identified, and one who fell ill in Switzerland. The remaining two cases – one from France, the other from Spain – were identified after the ship was evacuated and passengers were being repatriated. There has been no change in the number of deaths since 2 May, with a total of three deaths: a Dutch couple and a German woman.
Also in the press conference of WHO, Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the operation in the Canary Islands to safely remove the ship has been completed. The operation involved transferring more than 120 of the ship’s passengers to their home countries or quarantining in host countries en route to their final destinations.
“Due to the long incubation period of up to six weeks, more cases may emerge in the coming days as travelers return to their countries, where they are being isolated in special facilities or at home and tested,” Tedros warned. “This does not mean the outbreak is increasing; it shows that control measures are working, laboratory testing is ongoing, and people are being cared for with the support of their governments.”
The US is monitoring 41 people who may have been exposed. This includes the 18 passengers (including Kornfeld) who were evacuated. HondiusPassengers who disembarked from the ship on April 24, and people who shared the flight with a Dutch woman (the wife of the first case) who fell ill with the infection and died in South Africa on the way home.
