Waymo Drives Off With South Bay Man’s Luggage After Trunk Fails to Open

A Sunnyvale man says the Waymo that took him to the airport neglected to open the trunk to remove his luggage before driving off. The company wants him to pay for shipping, or take two complimentary Waymo rides to the depot in SF to retrieve it.

De Gein said her first Waymo trip to San Jose Mineta Airport on Monday went great, until the car took off with her luggage, NBC Bay Area reports. Jin said when he got out of the vehicle, he tried to open the trunk, but nothing happened when he pressed the button. Then the car started.

Something similar reportedly happened to a Waymo rider in San Francisco last April, causing some expensive tennis gear to go missing.

According to Waymo’s website, the trunk automatically opens when the passenger exits the vehicle. It can also reportedly be opened by pressing the trunk release button on the car or selecting “Open Trunk” in the app, which Jin says didn’t work in his case.

He said he immediately called Waymo’s customer service, and was told the vehicle could not be returned because it was going back to the depot in San Francisco. Jin told NBC Bay Area that he continued toward San Diego without any of the essentials needed for his trip, including work and personal items.

Once his luggage was returned to the depot, the company contacted Jin, citing its policy that it is not responsible for lost items. Waymo said he could either pay for shipping or take two complimentary rides to pick it up, which would entail a trip of about two hours from Sunnyvale. For Jin both options were out of the question.

“It doesn’t make any sense, because it’s not my fault,” he said. “I already told them clearly that it’s not lost and found, okay?” He said.

As SFist last reported, Waymo began offering service at San Jose Airport in September.

First: Be careful putting stuff in the trunk of a Waymo – sometimes they drive away
