Uber shareholders have sued the company’s board of directors and executives, accusing them of “deliberately undercutting compliance in the name of growing the company.” As first reported reuters, The legal action says Uber’s lack of compliance with the board has led to sexual assault and harassment of the app’s users, as well as violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and consumer protection laws.
“Uber’s leadership has a long history of devoting inadequate resources to customer safety and protection and establishing an environment of non-compliance throughout the organization,” the lawsuit says. “This has inevitably resulted in loss of customers and exposed Uber to massive legal and regulatory risk.”
The shareholders behind the lawsuit are demanding a jury trial, but are also demanding the company “refine and improve its corporate governance and internal processes” to address these ongoing issues. An Uber spokesperson told Engadget that “This lawsuit ignores important facts and is based on the misleading, false narratives of other meritless lawsuits that we have already addressed publicly and in the courtroom.”
However, legal troubles over Uber’s conduct with passengers are not new. In 2022, more than 500 female passengers filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging they were “kidnapped, sexually assaulted, sexually harassed, raped, falsely confined, stalked, harassed, or otherwise assaulted” by Uber drivers.
