PS Swarva Floor Lamp
“Some things I did myself, like this one. The Svarva lamp we made with the design group Front for the PS 2009 collection. They were quite newly established and so we made a chair and this lamp. The desire was to make a lamp made of wood, but you also have to be able to bend it, articulate it.”
“I thought it would be very difficult to do. With a colleague in lighting at the time, I went to this factory in Hungary that was producing lamps for us. It was all metal tubes that they were doing, so we were a little hesitant about whether they should be able to solve it. But they made some mock-ups based on designer drawings. So we went there to have a look, and it was just standing there. There were these floor lamps, and there was also a table lamp where there were wooden beads. Going in a circle and then up, like a snake.”
“We didn’t know there was this factory next to the lamp factory that made wooden beads, little individual pieces that we put together. None of us knew that. It was just coincidence. So they were turning these wooden beads, and the lamp factory was putting them on metal tubes like necklaces. They had very little to do, so they were happy to get the business.
PS sinka cabinet
“I have another favorite from that PS 2009 collection, it’s in my hallway. PS Sinka, with a wooden base with small drawers. Sinka means “dovetail” in Swedish, so the name explains that construction.”
“But the problem we had with it was that the amount of packaging was too large. So what we did was each drawer was a little shallow. So four drawers would stick into each other. And four more drawers would stack. There’s a little stopper in the back when you push them in, so they stop evenly in the front. There’s also a hidden compartment in the back of the smallest drawer. There are really nice drawers for all this stuff that Lying around and getting in the way, I have all my keys now, I don’t know where they go.”
PS Johnsburg Vases
“I have this vase from the PS collection to hold cables [on my Samsung Serif TV]. It was a set, the Jonsberg Vase by Hella Jongerius. There were four of them in different ceramic techniques. I had all four, but the terracotta one broke, which was a pity.” [It certainly is. These $39 vases now sell secondhand for $1,700 for a full set.]
“They’re inspired by different areas, and the different techniques are beautiful. I use the big black one for toilet paper in a bathroom. It’s not disrespect to the design. It’s such a cool design to stand out there, and it makes the bathroom beautiful, and it can fit toilet roll. So, why is there such a thing as an ugly stick? It’s good for that.”
Pax Wardrobe
“Pax. We have to mention Pax. I have Pax wardrobes in a few rooms, but I’m also a bit of a weirdo. Like the kitchen, these veneer doors have been sanded and hand-painted by me, just to make them fit into my house, my space. I repaint them sometimes.”
Sprka Pepper Mills
“I have these pepper mills. One for white paper, one for black pepper. That was also in the PS collection. We did these with Markus Arvonen. These pepper mills are beautiful, and they’ve been around for 20 years. They’re quite long. A smaller version came out later, but I love them.”
“They have their chips, yes, but that makes them better. It’s old. They’ve been around and are used every day. Everything has a little imperfection. You can spend your whole life being upset about it, but life has to have some imperfection. Fix it? Then something else needs to be fixed. It just keeps going. Let it go, be proud.”
BILLY Where’s the bookcase or closet?
“I don’t have a Billy in the house anymore. But the Kallax? I have several. Brilliant piece. Really good for vinyl, because that’s about the time they come out. I listen to a lot of vinyl.”
