At Least One UK Government Department Is Reportedly Done With X

Attorney General Richard Harmer told staffers to stop posting due to concerns over racism and violence.

Richard Harmer, the Attorney General of England and Wales, and Advocate General of Northern Ireland, have reportedly asked their departments to stop posting official updates on X. Guardian And reviewerHarmer left his department over the social network over concerns that X was being used to incite violence and racism. His office last posted on X on June 12. Earlier, he used to post updates on the platform frequently, sometimes even more than once a day, about the work being done by the government to tackle various issues in the region.

In a recent speech about the importance of Britain remaining aligned with the European Court of Human Rights after Brexit, he said: “We cannot allow a very small group of this world’s crypto-funded millionaires to use the debate about the ECHR or getting closer to the EU to create further division in this country – we cannot allow them to draw lines between our communities.”

Harmer decided to leave reviewer He says he told his staff about his decision last week after misinformation grew on the platform about the murder of Henry Novak, who was stabbed by a Sikh man, and the stabbing of a Dublin man by a Sudanese national.

Far-right activists were using the platform to spread disinformation and hatred towards immigrants, with X owner Elon Musk amplifying their voices. Some high-profile celebrities were also spreading doctored bodycam footage from the Novak case. Furthermore, Grok apparently misidentified two policemen who were involved in the Novak case. His information was then shared widely online.

While Harmer’s office is probably the first in the UK government to drop the Harmer reportedly told his staff that the only reason his office was posted on X was to correct misinformation on the platform.
