But the fact that I can get it on my PC without deleting two other games is already a plus in my book. We don’t need games that are big. We need games that excite and intrigue us. Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag was the pinnacle of the series – at least in terms of telling an effective story with unique gameplay. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t full of the typical entertainment the series is known for. Those who think about the game fondly may remember the highlights: intense naval combat that felt both gut-wrenching and rewarding; Thought-provoking sailing where you can sit back and feel your heart swell as your crew lifts a shanty; and a storyline that emphasized the character and emotional development of Edward Kenway, who transformed from a pirate idealist into a man who could cherish both freedom and family.
You don’t remember those awkward fight scenes that ultimately revolved around sitting back and waiting for the perfect parry, or the annoying parkour that required Kenway to jump off a two-story roof instead of onto the stage right in front of him. Sometimes, a game’s flaws make a title stand out more. I would rather have a strange, though charming, piece of art than an idealized but dull romance.
And this is important to note, because re-sync Still full of awkward moments. Once, while climbing rooftops when the game asked me to chase a Spanish captain, I inadvertently jumped onto the street below instead of into a nearby tree. The Captain saw me from the other side of the plaza and alerted all the guards nearby. He retreated towards a fort, and I followed him. I climbed over to the edge of the walls where there was a path I could climb up. I tapped the “A” button to get to another handhold, only to dive into the ocean below Kenway.
War is also not necessarily better. This is completely different. Players have a greater ability to place emphasis on reducing the opponent’s stamina before reducing their health parameters. You also have some other attacks that can stun opponents or knock them off buildings and onto ship tracks. There is still an option for Perfect Parries which will help you kill most of the enemies in one go.
Ubisoft claims players technically have more control over Kenway this time around. You have options to “back eject” from walls. There are now zip lines around certain areas that will help you escape faster after dropping a character on their head to steal their treasure. And, compared to shadow of assassin’s creedEnemies will actually chase you on rooftops, so you can’t easily escape pursuit by climbing onto a shack while your enemies futilely check the bushes below you.
There is more content in the game, including three new optional officers you can recruit to your ship, each with their own unique story. The section I performed allowed me to sneak onto an English warship to rescue a shipwright and convince him to join my crew.
This was an early preview version of the game, and Ubisoft still has more time to fix things before release. But it’s comforting to know that the game isn’t adding that much excitement to what already feels like a complete experience.
