There are several things to keep in mind when watching the growing number of robot demonstration videos and even livestreams. First, such robotic demonstrations are not necessarily indicative of robots working autonomously without human control or oversight, said Deepam Patel, a PhD candidate in computer science at Purdue University and a research assistant at the U.S. Army DevCom Army Research Lab. Many demonstrations still rely on human operators directly controlling the robot’s actions through teleoperation.
“Unless a research paper or company is explicitly mentioning it [the robot] It’s completely autonomous, you should take it with a pinch of salt,” Patel told Ars.
Another question to consider is whether the demonstration shows the robots dealing with a completely new test environment for the first time, or whether the robots are simply repeating a task they had already learned to do in that specific training environment. Patel said the new test environment will be very effective in demonstrating robots capable of functioning autonomously in a generalized manner.
It’s also worth checking the video playback speed for any robot demonstration, Patel said, because “robots are usually very slow” for safety and other reasons. Companies may sometimes reveal that a robot demonstration video is running at twice or four times the normal speed – meaning the robot may take twice or four times as long as a human to perform the same task.
Robot demonstration videos can also vary greatly in their informational value and transparency. Some are intended to be explicitly performative entertainment clips that can go viral on social media, or to be splashy promotional videos from companies looking for new customers and investors. Others can provide more behind-the-scenes information, acknowledging the robot’s mistakes during the robot training process.
But even though a robot demo video looks incredibly impressive and authentic when coming from a more reputable company or research lab, just keep in mind that it’s still just a small glimpse of the bigger picture. The actual indicators of progress in robotic capabilities are not so easily packaged for Internet audiences.
