Sony is closing the PS3 and Vita digital stores

It’s the end of an era for the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, with Sony now planning to shut down its digital distribution service on both consoles. The PlayStation Store on PS3 will launch in select markets later this year, including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, starting in August, with “additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries” following in late 2026.

The shutdown of both the PS3 and PS Vita will take effect in July 2027 “in all other countries.” After this date, Sony says console owners will be unable to purchase new content, but after the deadline passes they can continue to download previously purchased games “for the foreseeable future.” That means if you haven’t already purchased titles specific to the older consoles – the PS3 and PS Vita are turning 20 years and 15 years old respectively this year – you still have some time to do so.

“We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,” Sony said in its announcement. “As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on the new devices that the majority of our users are playing on today, we need to focus even more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look to the future.”

The announcement comes as Sony is preparing to cease all production of physical PlayStation discs for games released after January 2028 – raising the question of how future releases will be preserved given the limited lifespan of digital stores.
