“On April 12, 2026, at approximately 2:56 a.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to Russian Hill in reference to a suspicious incident of a possible shooting,” a statement from the San Francisco Police Department said.
“During the investigation, officers learned that a vehicle with two occupants had passed a residence at the time of a possible shooting. Investigators assigned to the Special Investigations Division (SID) conducted the investigation and determined that the vehicle belonged to Amanda Tom, 25, of San Francisco,” the statement continues.
According to police, Tom and 23-year-old Muhammad Tariq Hussain were arrested without incident and three firearms were confiscated.
The police statement did not elaborate and the SFPD did not respond to questions Monday, but the San Francisco Standard reports that “a man sitting in the passenger seat appeared to have put his hand out the window and fired one round” near Altman’s property. This information reportedly comes from surveillance footage and Altman’s security team.
Altman’s home was first attacked on Friday when Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, of Texas, allegedly threw an incendiary device and hit the glass doors with a chair before walking into OpenAI’s headquarters. The criminal complaint filed Monday in federal court says he wanted to “burn it down and kill anyone inside,” though this does not appear to be a direct quote and was summarized by security at OpenAI.
The complaint states that officers removed “incendiary devices, a jug of kerosene, a blue lighter and a document” from Moreno-Gama’s possession. The document is identified as a “three-part series” written by Moreno-Gama, allegedly stating that he killed or attempted to kill “Victim 1”, presumably Altman.
Moreno-Gama apparently wrote in opposition to AI and several executives at AI companies, although Gizmodo has not been able to independently verify the contents of the document. He reportedly had a list of board members and CEOs of AI companies as well as investors.
Moreno-Gama reportedly wrote, “Also if I am going to advocate killing and committing crimes against others, I have to lead by example and show that I am being completely honest with my message.” Another part of the document reportedly included the line “A few more words on the matter of our imminent extinction.”
Another part of the document addressed to Victim 1 reportedly includes the line “If by some miracle you survive, I will take it as a sign from God to redeem myself…”
Some people who are concerned about the potential dangers of AI have distanced themselves from the violence of recent days, while still placing the often imaginary fears they pose in important context.
“I maintain that violence is *never* acceptable. It’s immoral. But others will naturally think, ‘I’m in imminent mortal danger, and the CEO isn’t going to stop, so what other choice do I have?’ Wrote Dr. Emil P. Torres, author of the Realtime Techpocalypse Newsletter.
OpenAI did not respond to emailed questions on Monday. Gizmodo will update this article if we hear back.
