The summer blockbuster season has got off to a strong start with the theatrical release of disclosure dayDirector Steven Spielberg’s much-anticipated return to his sci-fi roots in “Aliens Are Among Us.” Verdict: There’s not much new or original here like movies about aliens, but it’s a fast-paced film with a dazzling performance from Emily Blunt that won’t fail to entertain.
(There are some spoilers below but no major reveals.)
The first half of the film is essentially a political thriller – a glimpse of 1974. parallax view And similar films-Due to global tensions the world is on the verge of a third world war. A cyber security expert named Daniel (Josh O’Connor) has stolen a piece of alien technology and highly classified files from his employer, Wardex Corporation, a top-secret extension of the US government led by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth). Scanlon takes Daniel’s girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson) hostage and forces him out. While bargaining, Daniel confronts them and escapes with Jane, and the two flee as Scanlon declares Daniel a traitor.
Meanwhile, Kansas City TV meteorologist Margaret (Emily Blunt) is having breakfast with her boyfriend Jackson (Wyatt Russell) when a cardinal flies by the window and makes eye contact with her before flying away. Margaret resumed her conversation with Jackson, only in Russian – a language she never learned. While at work, she discovers that she can read other people’s thoughts and emotions, and converse in their native languages. And then – in a key moment shown in all the trailers – Margaret begins her live weather report, but lapses into a foreign language on air. That moment instantly goes viral.
This brings him to the attention of Scanlon, as well as Scanlon’s Wardex colleague Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo). Hugo is the person who is pulling the strings behind the scenes to arrange the theft of top secret materials for Daniel. Their goal: to reveal their material to the world—detailing human-alien encounters over the past 80 years. Scanlon is equally determined to prevent the truth from ever coming out, and it becomes a high-stakes race against time as Daniel and Margaret try to escape their henchmen and find each other.
a vibe change
I won’t say too much about the final 30 minutes, as that would be giving away too much (although the final trailer did give some very strong hints). Suffice it to say that as the plot threads converge, there is a clear shift towards mystery. In Spielberg’s capable hands, it works, although some have criticized the CGI, especially for the animals. Given what those animals represent, I think it was the right decision to make them seem otherworldly, as if they were stepping out of a neutral story and into our dark, grim world.
