Later today, the NFL will officially release the league schedule for the 2026 season, which means we’ll learn the full details of the Buffalo Bills 2026 schedule this evening. But it has become common for the league and its broadcast partners to gradually release schedule-based content throughout the week before the schedule is released.
The schedule release has become the NFL’s tentpole event for the month of May. It efficiently fills a void in NFL action (everything related to the NFL has become unforgettable content this century), keeping fans tuned to news outlets to find out when their favorite team will play each opponent later in the autumn.
For many people, the NFL schedule release serves as a calendar planner for the second half of each year. Immediately after each team’s schedule is released, there is a surge in airfare searches/bookings as people make every effort to plan football-centric trips in advance.
Although we haven’t seen much reliable information about Buffalo’s upcoming rival schedule this time around, there is some information (aka rumors) to whet the appetite of the Bills mafia. This article will attempt to provide Rumblings readers with a catch-call tracker for rumors, leaks and released information that Bills fans may want to know.
Based on the NFL’s rotating opponent formula we know who Buffalo’s 2026 opponents will be. In 2026, the Bills will play their usual AFC East rival twice, as well as the NFC North, AFC West, and three second-place teams from 2025 – the latter of those opponents decided after finishing second in their division. The 17th game was determined by the AFC East vs. NFC West matchup (for the Bills’ case, the Los Angeles Rams).

Buffalo Bills 2026 NFL schedule rumors we’re following
Latest Bills 2026 regular-season schedule rumors
Full disclosure: Take all of these “rumors” with a grain of salt, as nothing is verified until we have an official announcement. The latest information we’re tracking is that Buffalo is set to take on two premier AFC West teams during the biggest national holiday.
First up we have rumors about the Bills hosting the Chiefs for a primetime Thanksgiving Day game on NBC. If true, it would be a departure from their now-annual regular-season matchup that is almost always scheduled because the game is shown in the late afternoon with CBS.
The other big rumor is that Buffalo could be set for a rare broadcast on Christmas Day – in a road game against the Broncos.
We’ll continue to update this tracker as new rumors emerge about the Bills’ schedule, including a full list of Buffalo’s 2026 games when they are announced. Until we have concrete information, most things related to Buffalo’s itinerary are left to social media rumors. We’ll include a bit of it here to encourage discussion.
Given that the Bills host the Lions in Week 2, this quashes any (admittedly unrealistic) thoughts about Buffalo hosting Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day game. The Lions are a television staple for Thanksgiving, and the league always plays host. Still, whether realistic or not, that leaves the Bills with one less option to showcase during the national holiday games list.
As far as Buffalo’s start to the 2026 season is concerned, there are some who believe it will be limited to two opponents. As shared by the Bills Chat Podcast, they come on a road trip to face the rival Minnesota Vikings or Miami Dolphins. Will the NFL really let Buffalo start its season with consecutive games against the NFC North? Sure, stranger things have happened, but teams opening with consecutive games against non-conference opponents are rare. (This happened in 2025, when the Rams faced the Texans and Titans to open.)
So, if the above rumor is to be believed, it’s probably in favor of going on a date with dolphins on what is sure to be a hot South Beach. Really, why do Miami and Minnesota (despite being NFC teams) make the most sense in Week 1?
As the Bills Chat Podcast points out, the Jets will play on the road with the New York Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys Week 1. Elsewhere in the AFC East, the Patriots are rumored to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Other rumors have the Houston Texans taking on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. Elsewhere, Buffalo may not face the Rams in the first week of action, with Los Angeles facing San Francisco. 49ers.
Then there are the Raiders, who some have viewed as a potential Week 1 matchup for the Bills. If Buffalo draws that matchup, it would mean a trip to the West Coast to (almost) start the season, followed by a short week preparing to face Detroit a few days later on Thursday. Add in the fact that Week 2 will mark the official opening of Buffalo’s new stadium, and there’s enough reason to believe the league will find reason to avoid burdening the Bills with less time to prepare for its primetime stadium showcase.
One thing that has now been confirmed is that the Bills will not be appearing as part of the 2026 NFL International Series. fellow rambler Flutiflex shared that news in the comments section below, and explained that “(a)Buffalo team at the end of the 2026 season will for the longest time Move forward without playing international games.
At some point, the Bills will run out of international luck. Although most Bills Mafia shudder at the reminder of the team’s previous annual Toronto Series game, a return to action north of the border would represent the best outcome for Buffalo when added back to games outside the United States. That is, if the NFL powers that be still see Canada as an attractive business move.
