
Google reported its annual electricity consumption is set to increase by 37 percent in 2025 – the largest increase in company history as construction of Silicon Valley’s AI data center continues. But the tech giant says it has kept operational carbon emissions low by continuing to purchase large amounts of clean energy.
The company’s latest sustainability report acknowledges that Google’s total electricity use has increased by more than 250 percent since 2019, which the company attributes to ongoing growth in data center construction and operations supporting Google Cloud, YouTube video streaming, and various AI products and services. The unprecedented 37 percent annual increase is part of an ongoing trend, given that Google’s total power consumption is also set to increase by 27 percent in 2024.
According to the Google sustainability report, “While the path to achieving our climate ambitions will not be linear – the buildout of our AI infrastructure is currently moving faster than the decarbonizing of the grid – we are focused on increasing abundant and affordable clean energy globally and advancing technological innovations that reduce emissions across our operations and the broader industry.”
