NATO military commanders will work out the details, Rutte said during a call with reporters ahead of a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Sweden.
US to send 5,000 troops to Poland: What to know?
Trump said Thursday he plans to send 5,000 troops to Poland, a move meant to reassure an ally.
“Based on the successful election of Karol Nawrocki, the current President of Poland, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
But the decision caused confusion because it came two days after the Pentagon announced it was suspending the deployment of brigade combat teams (4,000 to 4,700 soldiers) to Poland.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell then said that this meant there was going to be a “temporary delay” in the scheduled deployment of US troops to Poland.
The Pentagon’s move was also surprising because it was Germany, not Poland, that had criticized the US strategy in Iran, which angered Trump.
It was unclear whether Trump’s announcement meant the brigade would resume its deployment to Poland, if additional troops could be added on top of that rotational deployment, or whether Europe would still have U.S. troops but from a different country.
Trump said that America will reduce troops in Germany in early May. The Trump administration has said it expects Europe to take primary responsibility for security on the continent from the United States.
