More than a decade later, the team behind N++ is back with a multiplayer sequel

This means the same slick, acrobatic platforming action and gorgeous graphic design-inspired visuals, but now designed to be played competitively or cooperatively with friends in a few different modes. It’s launching on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC sometime in 2027.

The pair had been working on a few different things at MetaNet over the past 11 years. In addition to hopping from Toronto to Montreal, they’ve been prototyping ideas for some potentially bigger projects, and released a 10-year anniversary update last year N++. Studios operate in an unusual way, at least compared to most of the game industry. despite two hits N+ And N++MetaNet has not developed or grown in any way. And the reason for this depends on the way they create games: it takes a lot of time to find a game idea that is worth pursuing as a business project. “We resisted doing anything that would compromise our ability to continue iterating and prototyping until something looked good,” says Burns.

“It’s important to feel that magic,” says co-founder Mare Shepard. “That’s the fascinating thing about making games. That’s when we know we’re doing it in a way that’s right for us.” Burns has a clear analogy about the way they work: “We like being in a band. It’s fun. Being in a lot of meetings and doing a lot of managing: that’s not fun.” This philosophy seems especially prescient given the state of the games industry, where even the biggest hits operate in a way that is clearly not sustainable.

As creative industries from sports to Hollywood become increasingly homogenous, Burns also believes there is something important about making work that is different, even if it means revisiting a previous idea, say, through multiple versions. n. There are some big 3D game ideas underway, but they’ll require something on a grander scale that the studio has avoided so far. “If we can do something that expresses something new, or lets us look at things in a different way, or gives us a different perspective on what this game is or how to play it, then that’s exciting,” Shepard says. “I think we no longer think that this will definitely be the last. We’ve given up on that idea. It doesn’t have to be.”
