Matt Henry ends England’s resistance as New Zealand complete second Test rout | England v New Zealand 2026

New Zealand fell just short of taking the five England wickets required to ensure victory in the second Test on Sunday.

Matt Henry dismissed four England batsmen, including Joe Root, for 77 runs in a powerful 25-minute spell at the Oval. The hosts started the day at 182-5, but added just 10 runs for the loss of the first four wickets and slipped to 192-9 as the Black Caps showed no mercy.

Root had kept England’s faint hopes of saving the match alive with an innings of 75 runs on Saturday, but at the start of the final day the interim captain was out LBW to Henry after adding only two more runs.

After this, Henry completed the first over of the double wicket by bowling Joffra Archer for zero on two balls. The all-rounder’s hot streak continued as he dismissed both Matthew Fisher and Josh Tongue for ducks in consecutive balls, leaving Sonny Baker to join Jordan Cox at the crease.

Cox (25) gave the home crowd a chance to cheer by hitting two fours, but Henry soon got the job done, removing him with a yorker to end the match within an hour of the restart. Henry took six wickets for 29 runs in the second innings, taking his total to 11 wickets in the match.

The day began with the news that Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have both been withdrawn from their County Championship matches at the request of the ECB.

Both players were dropped from the second Test for violating the team curfew, but now both are likely to be recalled to the England XI for the third Test, which begins at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
