It’s a busy time for sci-fi, but don’t miss Aphelion

The past few weeks have been extremely disappointing for science fiction fans. Whereas Project Hail Mary dominate the box office for all Mankind It’s currently in the middle of its final season, with a spinoff streaming next month. When it comes to games, Capcom starts a new sci-fi franchise PragmataAnd Housemarque is about to launch a ghostly shooter saros. With all this going on, it would be easy to miss constellation. It’s a comparatively small and quiet adventure game, focusing more on storytelling than gameplay. But this also makes it a perfect complement to all the existing blockbusters, offering something more intimate and accessible.

constellation Developed by Don’t Nod, a studio known for the original life is strange and recent climbing games Jucent. The new game is kind of a mashup life is strangeto tell the story of and JucentGameplay of. In constellationIn the near future, Earth is too close to being habitable, but a recently discovered planet called Persephone has the potential to become humanity’s next home. Two astronauts, Ariane and Thomas, are sent to investigate how viable the planet is. Naturally, things go wrong almost immediately. Both crash into Persephone and are separated. So in addition to trying to complete the mission for the good of humanity, the pair are also desperately trying to find each other in the cold, barren wasteland.

constellation Plays like a third-person action game with a moving sim. Most of the time you’re simply making your way through the environment as the story happens around you, but there’s some puzzle-solving and platforming involved as well. After all, when you’re faced with a terrifying creature reminiscent of the Smoke Monster, there’s some stealth involved. lost. But Arion and Thomas find themselves in very different situations, and thus they take control in very different ways. Ariane is mostly healthy and intact, and so her search consists mostly of climbing and exploration. Meanwhile, Thomas is injured and his suit is damaged, so he struggles to navigate the world while dealing with a faulty oxygen tank. There are no weapons, so you deal with everything either by climbing or using tools like scanning devices and grappling hooks.

If you’re comparing it to other recent sci-fi games, there’s basically a progression: constellation is slower and more accessible, Pragmata is a little faster and more action-oriented, and then saros is a pure, amazing action game.

The story switches between the pair’s characters as they work asynchronously. It’s like a classic sci-fi novel told from multiple perspectives. Sections of Arion are more tense and action-focused, with some really great set pieces that give the game a cinematic vibe, such as when you’re making your way through a terrifying snowstorm filled with deadly lightning bolts. Meanwhile, the Thomas chapters are slower and more focused, as you uncover all kinds of new information about the mystery of the planet and the company that has sent you to explore it.

much like Pragmata, constellation Pulls from all kinds of sci-fi influences – from everything Foreigner To cat’s Cradle – so that feels familiar in many ways, especially when it comes to the main mystery. But what really propels it forward is the tragic story of its lead astronauts. I wanted to see them reunite more than I cared about whatever was happening with Persephone, although eventually that mystery wore on me as well. (constellationThe story is perhaps best described as a less entertaining version of “The Very Pulse of the Machine”.)

The dual-perspective story is almost entirely self-paced, and spans 11 chapters. constellation It is long enough to be told without overstaying its welcome. My only real problem with the game was how hard it can be. This is not an open world with many solutions to problems. Instead, progress means following the exact path the designers intended.

Generally this works quite well, but there were a few times when I found myself confused about where to go next or how to proceed, all because I missed a small hint. This often happens during climbing sections, where it sometimes looks like Like you can go somewhere, but jumping ends up falling to your death. These moments can be frustrating and mess with the momentum, but constellation It at least has very forgiving checkpoints, so when you die you can pick up right where you left off.

maybe sports constellation i miss it the most unbeatable. Both are essentially the video game equivalent of a short sci-fi story, something tightly paced and incredibly focused. constellation The blockbuster uses the visuals and gameplay of action games to tell a more intimate story, and that’s what sets it apart during this very busy moment in the genre.

constellation Launching on April 28th on PS5, Xbox, and PC.
