Following the heartbreaking death of Bobby Nash and Peter Cruise’s departure from the series in Season 8, 9-1-1 Fans began Season 9 fearing for Athena Grant’s safety and Angela Bassett’s future on the show. In an unfortunate full-circle moment, we’re ending the season just like that!

9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 17, “I Got You Babe”, was an eventful, harrowing hour that ended with a truly jaw-dropping cliffhanger. We saw Buck (Oliver Stark) reunite with his biological son Theo, whose parents later died in a tragic car accident. After 118 rescued a group of migrants last week and helped them get back on their feet, ICE raided the hospital and took everyone to a local holding facility for deportation. Then, when Detective Hooks (Josh Stamberg) convinces Athena to accompany him to make arrests in a smuggling case, he shoots her dead just before the end credits begin.
Naturally, there’s only one episode left 9-1-1 Season 9, fans will fear Athena. So does Athena die? 9-1-1 Season 9? And is Angela Bassett going? 9-1-1? Ultimately, we’ll have to tune in and see, but here’s everything we know about Athena 9-1-1 Fate before the Season 9 finale.
Does athena die? 9-1-1? 9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 17 Ending Explained
In the final minutes of “I Got You Babe”, Athena accompanied Hooks and an armed SWAT team to a mansion to capture Nikolay Castor, his son, and several associates who were believed to be involved in a trafficking ring. They deactivate the security cameras, and as the team apprehends the suspects, Athena and Hook set out alone to find Nikolay. Hooks opened his office door, pulled out his gun, and walked inside, with Athena following behind him. But once he was out of sight, Hooks yelled “gun”, fired his weapon twice and killed Nikolay. When Athena caught up with them, she did not see any weapon in Nikolay’s hand. Instead, he found a phone on the ground nearby and picked it up to check. When she turned back to confront Hooks about her hasty firing, he shot her and she fell to the ground. Just before the episode cuts to black, we see her slowly opening her eyes, but with Hooks under her control, as eager to silence her as Nikolay was, her fate certainly doesn’t look good!

But we do know that the gun was fired at incredibly close range, and although Athena was wearing a bulletproof vest for protection, a wave of blood flew into the air when she was shot, showing that the bullet had indeed hit the skin. So does Athena die? 9-1-1Season 9 finale?! The preview for next week’s episode was absolutely excruciating. It shows Eddie and Hen taking care of Athena in the ambulance, Harry crying in agony after seeing his mother, and reporting an active shooter at the hospital. It even looked as if Eddie was injured! (Tim Minear, let’s relax!) But back to Athena for now…
When Decider spoke to co-creator/showrunner Tim Minear earlier this season, he teased, “I’m really excited for all the characters. I can’t really spoil where we’re going in the last three episodes, but I’m also excited and scared about what’s going to happen with Athena. I think it’s going to be a really exciting story.”
I’ll repeat what I said at the beginning of this season when Athena’s life was in danger in space: I, for one, can’t imagine 9-1-1 Killing off another main character – especially MS. Athena Grant Nash – This shortly after Bobby’s death. Doing this with the audience? 118? Children of Athena? I mean, it’s absolutely diabolical. He said, I and many other fans had never imagined the show without Bobby. and minor Too He said he was “very excited” about the two-part contagion-inspired episode that featured Bobby’s death. So never say never! Said that…
Is Angela Bassett going? 9-1-1?
Minear recently told TV Fanatic that he’s “a little superstitious about having an episode that doesn’t have (Athena) in it,” so hopefully that means Bassett isn’t going anywhere. The fans (me) will riot straight away. The series is an incredible showcase of Bassett’s talent, and Athena is an important, complex character who regularly makes the impossible possible and absolutely shines in the big emergency episodes.
Like we said, we can’t imagine putting fans and characters through the ringer. again By killing off the show’s biggest star. And 9-1-1 ABC’s season 10 renewal has hit a milestone, so there’s undoubtedly more stories left to tell with all the main characters!
When teasing season 10 of Decider, Minear said he already had ideas. “I’m going to start a story at the end of this season that will continue into the next season. I’m so excited about it!” they shared. The showrunners are presumably talking about Buck and his son, a life-changing event that has a lot of potential to be explored in Season 10. So hopefully Athena will recover, the investigation will be completed, and Bassett will be back in action when new episodes return! Stay tuned for updates!
