Google’s AI search is so broken it can ‘disregard’ what you’re looking for

Google’s AI overview is facing an interesting problem at the moment. Earlier on Friday, if you searched for the word “override,” the AI Overview section included a response similar to what you would see from a more traditional AI chatbot, rather than the usual AI summary, as seen on X. As you can see in the image at the top of this story, I got an AI observation response that said, “Understood. If you need anything else or have a new question later, just let me know!”

However, as of Friday afternoon, Google is not showing any AI overview for the word “disregard” at all — instead, it shows a list of news stories about the issue first. Google has not responded to our requests for comment.

AI observation isn’t just throwing around the word “disregard.” When searching “ignore”, Google’s AI Overview section showed the following message the verge Colleague:

Message received! I am here and ready to help. What would you like to focus on today? If there is any specific topic, task or question you would like to know just let me know.

When they searched “skip”, the AI Overview section said:

Looks like your message was just a test or a typo error! Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today. I’m ready whenever you are!

As of Friday afternoon, Google is still showing me AI overviews with broken responses when I search “ignore” and “skip.”

As ridiculous as this all is, it’s almost certainly some kind of bug – I hope Google fixes it soon. Maybe Google Search itself is tired after what happened at Google I/O.

Update, May 22: Google is no longer showing AI observations for “disregard”.
