Because of the component crisis, it’s a bad time to want a new computer. But if you’ve been waiting to preorder the Framework Laptop 13 Pro — which Framework’s CEO has called “the MacBook Pro for Linux users” — the company shared good news on Thursday that may mean it’ll cost you less than you expected. The company announced that it has received cheaper new PCIe Gen 5 SSDs from its supplier, Adata, and if you ordered the configuration with a 500GB SSD, you will now get a 1TB SSD at a lower price. Framework also said you can now order configurations with a new 1TB or 2TB SSD onboard, though I’m not seeing them in DIY configurations yet.
But the framework also has some bad news. The company says it has “seen indications that CPU pricing will increase soon,” so it expects it will have to “adjust the overall system price on the Framework Laptop 13 Pro in the coming weeks to account for new orders.” That doesn’t bode well for the component crisis, which has already led to big price hikes across tech hardware, including those announced Thursday for Apple devices and Xbox consoles.
The framework initially announced the Laptop 13 Pro in April and originally planned to ship the first units in June. The company recently delayed those initial shipments until July due to problems with the laptop’s haptic touchpad and its custom display.
