As you flick on the touchscreen to glide across gorgeous lakes and rivers, you’ll really feel like you’re on the water, with a coach who talks to you and tells you when to rest and when to push.
I just logged into Lake Lure in North Carolina, a place I’d never heard of or thought about visiting but which actually looks quite nice. (It turns out that Lake Lure is where they filmed dirty dance, Which is great.)
For me, the center of the experience is competition. You get a live feed of how other sailors are performing on the same course. You can see how many meters ahead or behind you they are, and jump into position with extra thrust. it’s something like this Mario KartIf you were powering the kart (and couldn’t stop your opponents with banana peels or thunder clouds). When I see a woman in her sixties in front of me, but close enough that I could get caught up in her, you know I’m trying hard to get ahead of her (even though there are dozens of other women in their sixties by now, I’ll never be able to wake up to them).
You also get coaching on your forms, on screen, and through emails sent to you after your session. At the session I just did, I returned to my desk and got an email telling me that my accuracy was great, while my power and endurance were not. I will work on that.
I’m still pretty new to rowing, but the Hydro Machine has succeeded in getting me excited about it, which is the best you can ask for from a piece of workout gear.
