Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump had admonished Macri over the weekend for not moving fast enough to authorize flavored vapes, specifically menthol, mango and blueberry flavors, from Los Angeles manufacturer Glass. The FDA authorized those flavored products a few days later and issued a new policy that will make it easier to market flavored vapes.
Trump administration officials also noted that Macri had angered anti-abortion activists, who accused him of being slow to conduct a safety review of mifepristone, a pill used to treat miscarriage and abortion.
Officials also said Macaree was in conflict with other health officials and was seen struggling to manage his agency. He reportedly made enemies among lobbyists for the biotech, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries. Meanwhile, public health experts criticized Makri for making changes to the FDA’s vaccine reviews under his supervision, which were in line with the anti-vaccine agenda of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy.
“He has offended almost everyone involved with FDA issues, which is not easy to do,” Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, told the Times.
According to Politico, which first reported Macri’s resignation, it was Kennedy – not Trump – who called for a plan to fire Macri, although Trump had to agree.
