Best Laptops For College Students (2026): MacBooks and Beyond

no college laptop Should be embarrassed. Nor do they have to be extremely expensive. There are plenty of great laptops for college students that combine long battery life, easy portability, and the performance needed for everyday coursework in one great design.

I’ve been reviewing laptops for over a decade and have tested hundreds of laptops over the years, and if someone asked me what to buy, I would recommend these options.

Best overall college laptop

The MacBook Air is my pick for best overall laptop. This is something that almost everyone should buy. But college students have different needs — and in most cases, different budgets. It needs to be affordable, but ideally it should also be lightweight and easy to carry. The MacBook Neo fits the bill perfectly. It’s only 2.7 pounds and starts at just $599. It also has a smaller display, giving it a smaller footprint to fit on those smaller lecture room desks. However, what makes the MacBook Neo special is that it doesn’t compromise on quality. It’s a gorgeous piece of hardware, with fun colors, an excellent trackpad, a beautiful display, and that Apple “it” factor. I recommend the $699 model, which gets you double the storage and a Touch ID fingerprint reader.

Of course, this is not a laptop that is without its shortcomings. Apple invested its efforts in the front-of-screen experience, but chose to cut back on things like performance, ports, and memory to keep costs down. The 8GB memory limit is my biggest limitation with this device, and means you’ll need to pay more attention to how many apps, tabs, and background tasks you’re running. It can only connect to one external display at a time.

If the idea of buying a laptop with only 8GB of RAM in 2026 sounds suspicious, I don’t blame you. And if that sounds like you, I recommend the Asus Zenbook A14. Not only does it come with 16GB of RAM, but it’s also the lightest laptop you can buy right now at just 2.1 pounds. The 0.6-pound weight difference seems minor, but it’s a 22 percent weight savings and makes the ZenBook A14 significantly easier to carry than the MacBook Neo. You’ll hardly notice this thing in your laptop bag when you’re trekking across campus.

Pricing for the ZenBook A14 varies considerably. It regularly varies between $600, $830, and $1,000, but there is often a deal available that makes it an affordable device. There is also a 2026 model, which comes with the second-generation Snapdragon X2 chip. However, at $1,600, it’s not worth the extra cash.
