Ballmer gives $80 million to NPR, with strings attached

Connie Ballmer, wife of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder of the Ballmer Group, has given $80 million to NPR. This is equivalent to nearly seven years of government funding ($11.2 million) after Trump and Congress cut funding for public media, but only a fraction of NPR’s full annual budget of $300 million. NPR could still cut jobs because there are money strings attached.

According to a press release, the money is specifically intended to “support the digital innovation needed to meet the needs of public media audiences and serve their interests, wherever they are and whenever they want the information they need.” NPR journalist David Folkenflik writes…
