A pair of AirPods are one of the best options for putting content in your ears. The sound quality is great, and they’re so feature-rich that they’re starting to absorb some of the tasks that used to require a device with a screen, meaning your work can be in your ears all day.
But all that complexity can require granular controls and data displays during use, and the existing AirPods controls leave a lot to be desired. However, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman strongly suggests that Apple has heard users’ outrage.
Gurman says that with the release of iOS 27, (and with OS updates for Macs and iPads) Apple is “improving the AirPods Settings menu to make it more functional.” However, importantly, he says the AirPods aren’t getting their own app like the Apple Watch.
What exactly is being updated is unclear. Personally I’d like to see a quick and easy way to scan and install firmware updates, as the current process – wait and pray – is a bit vague to me. And the options for displaying my battery status are vague and, in my case, a bit inconsistent.
Gurman also claims (based on information from unnamed sources) that “key feature options are better highlighted” in the updated software.
