For nearly two weeks, high-ranking team members at Anthropic have been negotiating with the Trump administration, trying to remove the highly restrictive export control directive. According to a new report from Wired, those talks weren’t going well, and that’s at least partly because CEO Dario Amodei was involved, but things are reportedly looking up since Amodei left the talks.
According to Wired, the White House is now talking to Tom Brown, another Anthropic co-founder (that’s his full job title, according to his LinkedIn). An unidentified person reportedly involved in the call told Wired, “Tom Brown is not as awkward as Dario and can actually engage.” Wired’s sources claim that Amodei was reportedly difficult to deal with and was not a good listener.
Previous reports claimed that Amodei has a tendency to “talk nonsense” and that he “can’t control his emotions.” If you’ve ever watched Amodei’s videos, including those made in friendly situations, you’ll know that his natural facial expressions are a bit awkward, that his speaking voice is trumpet-like, that he waves his arms around while speaking, and that he sometimes not only breaks eye contact but bows his entire head toward the ground while speaking.
What is online suggests that Brown’s speaking style is completely nervous and goofy, but a much warmer and more conventionally personable version. He seems to smile easily, and his voice is much softer and steadier than Amodei’s.
Wired says Brown is working on negotiations with Sarah Heck, Anthropic’s head of public policy. His conversation style – again, that is online – is enthusiastic and on message, but also quite disciplined and cautious, qualities that a job as head of public policy requires.
Anthropic needs the White House to approve its Cloud Fable 5 AI model, the most advanced Frontier model Anthropic makes available to consumers once again for general use. Anthropic calls the Fable 5 a “Mythos-class” model, meaning it’s built with the same core technology as the Cloud Mythos Preview. which Anthropic considered very dangerous To be accessible to the public.
The Fable 5’s capabilities were apparently stripped away, making it a potential cybersecurity threat, but according to multiple sources sayAmazon researchers informed the White House shortly after its release that the jailbreak could easily remove these security measures. Before knowing about the jailbreak issue, the White House was Allegedly was already concerned that potential bad actors linked to Chinese interests had gained access to the model, so it issued an export control order about three days after the Fable 5 was released. Anthropic was required to prevent non-US citizens from using the Fable 5 (along with another, much more exclusive model, the Mythos 5).
anthropic announced that it has pulled the Fable 5 Offline on 12 June. Negotiations between Anthropic and the White House began soon After that.
