It’s only been a few months since Asha Sharma is Xbox’s new chief executive, but things already look like they’re changing for the better. Or at least, they can be cheap. The Verge The new Xbox CEO was reported to have written a memo to employees addressing the current price of the Game Pass subscription service.
“Game Pass is the center of gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model is not final,” Sharma reportedly said. “Short-term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long-term, we’ll evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system that will take time to test and learn.”
After Microsoft raised the price of Game Pass twice within 15 months, many of us certainly felt that the service had become too expensive to keep. Xbox is still offering a wide range of titles on Game Pass; Indies like are being added in the April update Hades 2 and new double fine project Kiln With hits like AAA remakes call of Duty Modern Warfare. The VergeSources suggested that the inclusion of the COD franchise may have been a factor in some of the increase in Game Pass prices, as Microsoft would lose revenue from making the latest entries in the series available under subscription.
It’s too early to say whether this memo from Sharma means Xbox is on the verge of a resurgence. And the company could make some changes, such as adding more complex levels, which would hinder Game Pass interest and growth going forward. But after so many surprise moves from Xbox in recent years, it’s refreshing to see the problem acknowledged even internally.
