For smaller releases, including LPs, from medium-sized indie labels (Drag City, Kranky, Superior Viaduct), see Midheaven Mailorder. The site is run by San Francisco distributor Revolver USA, which sells to record stores across the US, but also directly to consumers. Here you’ll find a ton of independent music, including select reissues from big names like Devo, Sonic Youth and The Fall.
Another great independent record store is Amoeba Music, famous for its amazing selection among many stores in California, and it what’s in your bag YouTube series. If you want to support a good brick-and-mortar record store and know what you want, we always recommend purchasing from Amoeba rather than Amazon.

Stones Throw, Sub Pop, Secretly Group, Fat Possum, Rough Trade, Daptone, Blue Note, International Anthem and hundreds of other record labels have websites and sell records directly. If you see that an artist you like is signed to a small label, there’s a good chance other artists on the label are similarly inclined.
Start by checking the liner notes on the back of all your albums to see who made them, then locate those labels on the web. You’ll probably find some cool new tunes on vinyl along the way.
straight from the artists
We’ve saved the best for last. Pay artists for their work directly in their hands with cash or Venmo transactions. Buying records at the merch table when an artist plays in your city is not only convenient for you (there’s no shipping, and you usually won’t be charged tax), but it’s one of the biggest revenue streams for bands on tour. You can often find special editions, special colored vinyl editions, and even records that haven’t been released yet just by stopping by the merchandise table. And if you’re lucky enough to meet the artist at the venue, they’ll usually sign the record jacket for you.
If you don’t go out much (we know, concerts are expensive), just find their website, social media page, or record label and order. I have at least a few records with personal thanks and signatures from small artists, which feel really special every time I listen to them!
