By 5 a.m. widespread rain fell across north and central Georgia, with some of the heaviest rain moving through parts of Paulding, Douglas and Fulton counties toward areas like Barnesville and Griffin. Although isolated thunderstorms are possible, the system is largely producing beneficial rainfall which the region needs.
It is expected that the rain will reduce around or soon after sunrise, the conditions will improve and the afternoon will become partly cloudy, breezy and light rain will occur.
However, the traffic situation has already been affected. A southbound crash near LaVista Road on the east side of Interstate 285 temporarily blocked the left lane, causing delays heading to Chamblee Tucker Road. Another crash was reported on southbound I-75 near Jonesboro Road.
Live reports from midtown Atlanta showed the intensity of the rain increasing, flooding roads and creating dangerous driving conditions. Officials have warned that wet roads could lead to more fatal accidents as the morning commute continues.
