Olivia Wilde revealed on the “Armchair Expert” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that she was nearly crushed to death by horses on the set of director Jon Favreau’s 2011 Western action film “Cowboys & Aliens,” which was based on the graphic novel of the same name. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford lead the tentpole with the likes of Wilde, Goggins, Sam Rockwell and Paul Dano in supporting roles.
Wilde said, “Walt Goggins saved my life in that movie.” “He did. My horse had a really bad accident, and he saved me. It was me and Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, running full speed across the desert with 40 horses behind us. And it was like we were headed to fight aliens or whatever.”
Wilde said that there was a “big ditch” over which the horse jumped during the take, inadvertently causing the actor to fall from the horse.
“So of course, this horse jumps and pushes me in the craziest way,” she said. “I fell. My head and back hurt, and I was lying (on the ground), but, unfortunately, I was on the other side of this kind of dirt, which meant all the horses behind couldn’t see me. And there was a lot of dust, too. I remember my ear was on the ground and I could hear it and it sounded like thunder, like they were coming toward me. And I thought – this sounds very dramatic – but I thought, it would be quick. It was like That would be, powdered applesauce.
Wilde continued, “Walt Goggins saw (me) in front of him and in one second thought about turning his horse right in front of me and letting everyone attack him.” “And he’s a great rider, so he was able to handle it. People split sides around us thinking he’d gone crazy, but he was protecting my body on the ground. And so I owe my life. It’s crazy. He’s a real-life hero.”
“Cowboys & Aliens” was released in July 2011 and was a box office disappointment with $175 million worldwide on a production budget in the $160 million range. However, reviews were positive Diversity The film was praised calling it “a complete, thoroughly satisfying yarn”.
