The spacious astronaut flight suit was developed with the company’s customers in mind, from its fit to its features.

Worn as a one- or two-piece garment by zipping (or unzipping) the jacket from the pants, the flight suit will be tailored for each crew member, while also providing increased comfort and mobility through back vents and shoulder gussets. The suit also has pockets and hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) so that equipment can be easily stored and retrieved.

“In microgravity, you have to have your hands free and your instruments always within reach,” said former NASA astronaut Megan MacArthur, who is also advising Vaast. “You’re constantly moving through small spaces and placing your body in a way that we don’t experience on Earth.”

Despite its clean white color and uniform design, the suit also offers points of personal customization. According to the company, each crew suit will have its own mission patch, and will have a space for each crew member’s flight badge, “wings”, which they will earn from Vaast by individually launching, staying in orbit, and conducting missions in space.

Separate from but along the same lines as the flight suits, each Vaast crew member will also wear the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive, a watch designed by Swiss luxury watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen and tested in partnership with Vaast. IWC engineered the watch to meet the challenges presented during human space flight, including replacing the crown with a more glove-friendly rotating bezel. Vaast ensured that the watch could withstand vibrations and pressure changes and adapt to the Haven-1 on-board environment.

“This is something that astronauts can actually use,” Feustel said. “This is the flight suit for the commercial, crewed spaceflight era, and this is really just the beginning.”
