Unfortunately, ‘Masters of the Universe’ Doesn’t Have the Power

making a film based on lord of the universe An incredibly difficult task. Based on a toy series that became a hit animated series, the world is a very unique, very strange mix of fantasy, 1980s action tropes, and clearly designed characters so you can play with them. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, but it also requires a certain reverence to make it seem epic, and it never loses sight of the fact that it’s self-aware and fun.

It seems impossible to translate this into a film, but if anyone can do it, it’s director Travis Knight. Laika’s president achieved a similar task with one of the best transformer movies, bumblebee, And he was well aware of the unique challenges of the story and its setting lord of the universe. He expressed his desire to ensure that lord of the universe A Difficult Needle Threaded: A film that unabashedly loves this universe and its characters, but also makes it accessible to audiences who don’t. Something that is exciting, emotional and quite impactful. Unfortunately, he and the film mostly fail to hit that little bullseye of tone, resulting in a film that was ambitious and beautiful, but ultimately disappointed.

Here’s what we mean: After being forced to leave his home world of Eternia and spend his entire childhood on Earth, Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzin) returns home. There, he sets out with the help of his friend Tila (Camila Mendes) and others to defeat the man who ruined his family, the evil villain Skeletor (Jared Leto).

They are in the middle of a fight. They are losing. So Adam decides to embrace his destiny. He holds the sword of legendary power in the air and yells the most iconic line in the entire franchise: “By the power of Grayskull, I have power!” Adam then rises from the ground and begins his transformation into He-Man. The score swells, the effects dazzle, and the muscles bulge. “We survived,” Tila says, perfectly summing up that amazing moment. If ever there was a moment to be taken seriously, this is it. A few seconds later, something happens. He-Man gets screwed, and he immediately returns to Teela, who says, “We’re screwed.”

This pattern of ruining an exciting, epic moment with a poorly timed joke happens again and again. lord of the universe. You almost wouldn’t believe how, in every scene, the attempt at humor always ends up being focused on something else. And then how, more often than not, those efforts aren’t funny. Obviously, the jokes are meant to add playfulness to the scenes. Feeling of insignificance. But it goes much further than that, almost to the point of absurdity.

Masters of the Universe Adam Duncan

There are also things that don’t fit at all. For example, Idris Elba’s character is Duncan, the former man-at-arms of Adam’s family. He is also the father of Teela, who trained both of them in their childhood. However, after being defeated by Skeletor, Duncan clearly had a hard time. When we meet him again, he’s a full-blown drunk and Adam believes he’s some sad old drifter living in a dungeon. But no, that man sleeping on the floor in his own filth is actually the most important person in her life. The alcohol addiction also comes back a few other times in an attempt to humanize him and create tension with his daughter. However, this is too serious a topic for this film and comes completely out of nowhere. It is neither additive nor resonant. It doesn’t fit at all.

Then there are the jokes you can’t believe weren’t cut. Take side characters Fisto (Johannes Haukur Johannesson) and Ram-Man (John Xue Zhang). These are two from a long list of fun lord of the universe The characters who populate the film. The script (which is credited to six people between story and dialogue) makes a very smart decision to explain why each of them are given such ridiculous, toy-friendly names. It’s honestly kind of genius, and we won’t spoil it. But, instead of just winning, the film features several sexual jokes about the characters fisting and assaulting each other. This is borderline inconvenient.

Masters of the Universe Skeletor
Jared Leto plays Skeletor – MGM

This dance between good characters, fun action sequences, and strange humor and tone makes up the bulk of the film. But then, almost suddenly, something changes. There is a moment in the third act of lord of the universe Where it’s almost like a switch has been flipped. You’re watching an interaction between He-Man and Skeletor that is obviously ridiculous, but it somehow makes narrative sense, grounds it emotionally, builds character, and is also funny. That moment is followed by some excellent action beats, punctuated by great, hilarious references to the original cartoons. Watching these final scenes, you can’t help but say, “Wait, where was the rest of the movie?” This is wonderful, but its significance comes too late. Instead, it makes the rest of the movie look even worse by comparison.

It’s a shame because everyone is involved. lord of the universe Obviously incredibly passionate about it. Galitzine is a wonderful He-Man with great presence and compassion, and also an excellent Adam, whose goofiness makes us cheer for him. Alison Brie as Evil-Lynn and Kristen Wiig as the voice of Roboto are having a lot of fun. Jared Leto’s Skeletor is exactly the kind of villain you’d want: smart and stupid, but also scary and dangerous. Daniel Pemberton’s score is wonderful in every sense of the word, providing a nice balance of 1980s nostalgia with exciting, action energy. And, of course, the costumes and sets look like you’ve stepped into your TV screen and lived in this world. they are fantastic.

In fact, the movie is so confident that it has done everything right, it gives us not one, not two, but three end credits that reveal what will happen in the future. We will see how it works. because while lord of the universe It’s definitely not a good movie, it’s more disappointing than any other movie. It has all the right intentions and a few memorable moments, but it’s mostly disappointing and awkward.

lord of the universe Will open on 5th June.
