German rail company Deutsche Bahn is resuming train services after trains were halted for nearly two hours across the country on Tuesday night due to a technical glitch.

Deutsche Bahn said in a statement that the problem – a technical fault in the so-called Global System for Mobile Communications for Railways (GSM-R) communication system – had been fixed.

Deutsche Bahn said the earlier disruption was caused by a nationwide problem with the GSM-R communications system, which is used for international communications on the railway network.

This means that all trains across the country were suspended.

All trains were suspended in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state.

Berlin public transport authorities said municipal, regional and long-distance trains run by Deutsche Bahn were affected by the disruption.

The problem has been identified and technicians are working to resolve the issue

German Rail said in an earlier update that the disruption that caused the internal communications disruption had been identified and that technicians were working to resolve the problem.

Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla spoke to German image Earlier the newspaper had said, “Now we are trying to get the trains to the stations so that passengers can disembark. And then we have to fix the problem, which we don’t know about yet.”

Deutsche Bahn apologized to passengers for the situation and issued taxi and hotel vouchers to those affected.

German rail is notorious for frequent late trains and cancellations.

S-Bahn services in Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart were also affected by the closure.

Passenger train services or S-Bahn suburban railway links operated by Deutsche Bahn were also affected in some cities, including Berlin.

Berlin S-Bahn officials said all trains on all lines were suspended due to a communications failure.

Stuttgart officials said the same, writing: “Currently, all S-Bahn trains across the entire network are being stopped at platforms.”

“Please check your journey in the travel information system for alternative transport options. We will inform you as soon as we have new information and can assess how long the disruption will last.”
