This is a construct that works fine if you’re trying to map out a few episodes of a serialized TV show that someone might throw in the laundry. But it feels especially disappointing when you’re hoping to recreate the pinnacle of Star Wars in an IMAX theater. Sure, there’s some amazing thrill in seeing Din Djarin defeat the Imperials And Their AT-ATs alone. But, unfortunately, we have seen him do this on TV too. The Mandalorian and Grogu Just doesn’t offer anything new.
While Favreau and co-writer Dave Filoni (who is also now the head of Lucasfilm and everything Star Wars) have pitched this film as a standalone adventure, it’s also not very friendly to those who haven’t seen it. The Mandalorian. We get no explanation of who Din Djarin really is, or why he feels compelled to raise a green alien child. We know they’ve partnered up, but the importance of Grogu is never touched upon. And there are characters who play a larger role in the film, such as Jerin’s co-pilot Zeb, who aren’t even named until the end. ( Anime fans take note: Zeb is voiced by iconic voice actor Steve Blum, so hearing the voice of Spike Spiegel playing another space bounty hunter is a definite nod to him.)

The film also hopes that audiences will already be enamored with Grogu, the tiny Yoda-like adorable force-wielding creature who still babbles like a baby and eats everything in sight. If you’re not put off by his antics, which border on the cartoonish at times, this film may be particularly distressing. But if you’re biased towards Grogu, there’s a large portion of the film where he’s left to fend for himself, and it shows that he’s matured at least somewhat over the series.
However, to be clear, The Mandalorian and Grogu Not a bad film. It’s even more fun than that singleA movie I think most people have completely forgotten about, and it’s not that disappointing rise of skywalker. This is a fun space walk that is entertaining enough to hold your attention during the summer months. But it doesn’t offer anything more than that The Mandalorian Has already been done on TV screens. I can see a more ambitious Star Wars series internal management and and excellent-but-obnoxious retainer Stick to the big screen without much effort, but The Mandalorian and Grogu Still feels limited due to its small-scale origins.
