‘The Bear’ has just released a surprise episode. Here’s how to watch it now.
The most obvious culprit is Carmy (Jeremy Allen White)’s relationship with Claire (Molly Gordon). A childhood friend who re-enters Carmi’s life, Claire is less of a real human character than she is a walking self-help book for Carmi. She spends almost every moment on screen talking about him: her memories of him, her mental health struggles, her relationship with her family. In theory, she has a life besides Carmi – her character’s defining characteristic other than being her girlfriend is vaguely “nurse” – but in hindsight BearYou wouldn’t know this.
Usually a great artist (see: shiv baby, Oh, hi!and more), Gordon is reduced to two modes here: the dazzling love interest, or the calming therapist, hanging on Carmy’s every word. she is not alone Bear character to fulfill this destiny. As Bear Ever staffer grooms Jessica (Sarah Ramos) into a potential match for Richie (Ebon Moss-Barach), replacing her level expertise with empty platitudes that leave her grounded. (The Season 4 line “Honesty is a conscience” made me throw my head through the wall.) Elsewhere, Richie’s ex-wife, Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs), serves as a similar pillar of support.

Their heads constantly cocked, their eyes shining in adoration, their mouths always ready to offer an eager laugh or some general advice, these characters are transformed. BearThe single thought of a woman in love. Now, BearThe standalone episode “Gary” introduces a new addition to this pantheon: Sherry (Marin Ireland) from Gary, Indiana.

Sherry is a woman whom Richie and Mickey (Jon Bernthal) meet at a bar during Gary’s work trip. She immediately bonds with Mickey, playing a private game of “Fact or Fiction” with him, listening to his complicated problems while they are together in a bathroom stall, and steals his beanie and wears it like a middle schooler trying to get over a crush. This is a level of blind-side pathos we haven’t seen since Claire Byers, and Ireland, usually a huge asset to any project, soon gets caught up in it. BearArchetype of love interest. (Any Please Ban affectionate head bows from the set of Beareffective Immediately.)
While Sherry seems like she was a moment of bright connection in Mickey’s life, perhaps even “the one that got away”, she really comes across as an empty vessel for him to pour his trauma into. “What are you looking for, Michael?” she wonders. Later, when he asks for permission to use cocaine, she simply replies, “I want you to be you.” It’s a series of fake intense exchanges that even two great actors can’t sell. (It doesn’t help that Bernthal and Moss-Barach wrote the episode.)
Only that fake depth sinks BearOther romances too. The show tries to emphasize these deep, cosmic relationships, but it forgets that these relationships should be a two-way street. Maybe that’s why many viewers are drawn to shipping Carmi and Sydney (Ayo Edebiri). While showrunners have confirmed that their relationship is platonic – and I personally agree with that choice – what sets this fictional pair apart is that they each have such rich lives, both working together and keeping their time apart. that’s because Bear There is investment in both of them as characters, rather than just using one as a tool to unlock the other. You just can’t say that about it BearOther romantic pairings, and the release of “Gary” proves that romance is the recipe. Bear It has not been mastered yet.
“Gary” is now streaming on Hulu. Bear Season 5 will premiere on Hulu this June.
