Taylor Rooks made a massive impact on screens this week after helping pay off more than $2.1 million in medical debt for residents of her hometown Gwinnett County, Georgia. Through a partnership with the Taylor Rooks Foundation and the nonprofit organization Undue Medical Debt, Rooks helped eliminate medical debt for 1,805 residents in the county where she grew up.
The Emmy-nominated broadcaster announced the initiative on April 22 and explained why the issue is extremely personal to him.
“I believe equality starts with access – access to care, to confidence, to opportunity. My work is based on trust, community, and the radical idea that a single act of support can rewrite someone’s story.”
“My little sister has type 1 diabetes, so I know firsthand how medical bills can add up. Sometimes it can feel like you’re drowning, and it can feel like you don’t have anything to do about it. Medical debt is not something people even plan for. It often comes at some of the hardest moments of life and can stay with people longer than they should.”
“This kind of relief has a real impact. It reduces the financial stress that many people silently carry with them, and it gives people the ability to focus on their health, their families and whatever comes next.”
“At the Taylor Rooks Foundation, we are committed to continuing this work by expanding access, removing barriers, and creating real opportunities for people to build this stability. Everyone deserves the chance to move forward without being held back by circumstances beyond their control, and we promise to help people make that happen.”
For Rooks, this wasn’t just another celebrity charity announcement. Her younger sister suffers from Type 1 diabetes, which Rooks says gave her first-hand experience at how quickly medical bills can overwhelm families. That emotional connection drove this initiative forward.
Medical debt is financially crippling millions of Americans. According to reports from the partnership, more than 100 million Americans currently struggle with medical debt, which amounts to approximately $220 billion nationwide. Many families are forced to cut into savings, delay basic needs, or damage their credit just trying to stay healthy.
This burden also disproportionately impacts communities of color. Data cited with the initiative showed that 27.9% of black families have medical debt compared to 17.2% of white families. Rooks said removing that pressure makes a real difference for families. This initiative is part of a much larger vision.
Rooks officially launched the Taylor Rooks Foundation in 2025 with a mission focused on equality, education, wellness and opportunity. The Foundation focuses on three main pillars: access, relief and representation.
Outreach includes educational resources, wellness initiatives, small business assistance, and direct donations. Relief focuses on health assistance, crisis assistance and essential needs. Representation centers around mentorship for journalists and storytelling opportunities for underrepresented voices.
Prior to this medical loan initiative, the Foundation had already provided $20,000 in utility assistance for families struggling with electricity, water, heat and phone service costs. Rooks has quickly become one of the most respected voices in sports media through his work covering the NBA, NFL and boxing. But this latest move showed a completely different side to his influence.
Instead of headlines built around interviews or viral clips, it focuses on helping provide financial relief to nearly 2,000 people. And for many Gwinnett County families, that relief could permanently change their lives.
