Signet City Is A New ‘Fungalpunk’ RPG From The Creator Of Citizen Sleeper

Following an early teaser in May, Citizen Sleeper creator Gareth Damien Martyn has revealed Signet City. Martin describes his new game as a “fungalpunk” RPG. In a very brief trailer, we’re introduced to the game’s stark monochrome visuals and mushroom-infested City 17-esque setting, as the post-punk drone of the band Sprints plays in the background. “You are a parasite, living in a city where strange technologies and radical ideas are taking root,” the game’s YouTube description says. “Grow in and through its residents, uncover and change their stories, and watch the final season of Signet City unfold.”

“Unlike traditional RPG heroes, the player Signet City “Exists as a parasite that roams the social body of the city, shaping interactions, influencing residents, and navigating the game’s beautifully crafted locales,” publisher Fellow Traveler Witness wrote in their press release for the game. “This allows the game to dig deeply into the inner lives of the parasite’s hosts in the powerful, impressionistic prose that has become a signature of Jump Over the Edge’s games.” A Fact Sheet It is said in Signet City It is partly inspired by the turbulent decade experienced by the United Kingdom during the 1980s, with its northern industrial cities serving as inspiration for the setting.

Martin’s last game, in other watersand the Citizen Sleeper series, were all set in the far future, so for them to explore what an alternate reality might be like for their latest project is something new. As for the art style, screentoned manga, pen and ink drawings and black and white photography have been cited as touchpoints. Signet City Martin is also seen working with a new group of collaborators, with Eli Rainsberry replacing Amos Roddy to produce the game’s soundtrack and audio, and Tom Kitchen assisting on its environmental art.

I think many people will compare Signet City To the last of usBut I would argue that the game sees Martin exploring ideas that have interested him for years. In an interview after the release of Citizen Sleeper, He cited Anna Tsing mushroom at the end of the world As one of the primary effects of the game. Tsing’s book critiques capitalism, and our current era of precarity and ecological destruction, through the lens of matsutake, one of the more expensive varieties of mushroom. Matsutake, as well as girolle and other species of fungi, feature prominently in all Citizen Sleeperits sequel and in other watersIn which the player guides a xenobiologist through an alien landscape teeming with life.

Signet City Will be coming to PC via Steam later this year. No word yet on other platforms.
