When the surprise announcement came in early 2024 that Central Market in San Antonio would begin renovating its lone location at 4821 Broadway, the work was scheduled to be completed by June 2026.
“At this time, we expect the project to be completed by the end of 2027,” an HEB spokesperson told MaISA.
As of Monday, June 1, work on the parking lot is almost complete – except for a few large trucks that are still crowding the entry and exit lanes. But half of the storefront is still surrounded by fences, beams and construction crews.
Inside, things have changed considerably. What was once a familiar series of rows arranged in a grid has now become a confusing maze of disparate sections. Beer is where prepared food used to be. Kombucha and cold coffee are hidden in the back right. The cheese is in a similar location, but it is blocked by temporary structures and shutdown devices.
Overall, it’s a manageable experience. But if you haven’t been in a while, don’t expect to stop right away. Basically, there’s nothing where you remember it being there.
But all this is really for a better central market by 2027 or 2028. Construction was divided into two phases. Phase one cost about $6.5 million and will be finished in 2024, while phase two will cost HEB about $22 million and should now be finished late next year.
When it’s all complete, the store facade will be completely redesigned, and the interior will be completely redesigned. Additionally, the café will have expanded seating space.
“For decades, at the corner of Broadway and Patterson, a special relationship has been built between our store, this community and our partners,” Stephen Butt, president of HE-B’s shareholder relations and central markets division, said when the plans were announced in March.
He added, “When we are finished, the newly renovated Broadway Central Market and our friendly partners will be well-equipped to continue serving our customers with the world’s freshest and best specialty products for many years to come.”
