Apple is hoping that its record on privacy can be a differentiator on the AI front, and maybe even loosen it up a bit as it lags the competition. according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a more chatbot-like Siri is set to debut in iOS 27 that will include the option to autodelete chat history. Users will be able to save conversations for 30 days, a year, or forever. This is in stark contrast to other major players in the space who generally only offer temporary secret chats, if that.
Apple appears to be betting that people are willing to give up some features in the name of greater privacy, as concerns over AI continue to grow. While the company is replacing many of its under-the-hood components with Google’s Gemini technology, it seems it is trying to turn some of the perceived weaknesses of Apple Intelligence into a selling point. As Gurman notes:
Most leading AI chatbots today rely heavily on history and memory systems to personalize responses and improve future conversations. But Apple will impose strict limits on how the memory works, including restrictions on what information can persist and how long it can be kept.
