Another Are you imagining it yet? Is this inspiring you to wet your whistle?
You may remember Polymarket’s stunt from last month, when it opened a grocery store called “The Polymarket” in New York City and gave away free groceries to 300 people per day for a few days, mostly to people who wanted to buy groceries. It was either meant to be a brutal takedown of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to open a handful of city-owned grocery stores, or, because it helped demonstrate a desire among New Yorkers for some relief from overwhelming groceries, perhaps it was an effort for him to prove his point?
But a better reference point might be a more recent high-concept sports bar in Washington, DC, Political Patty’s, which opened in 2024, and was founded around the theme of bipartisanship. Political Patty generated hot posts online, but apparently no revenue, and promptly closed after 75 days in business.
I hate to say it, but Polymarket’s Situation Room is an interesting concept – reminiscent of sitting in any bar in any airport in the world, with lots of flight information and TV news text scrolling by. But what have we been doing all the time in airports for the last 20 years? Unless our favorite game is on, the answer is staring at our phones. For me this often means news sites and social media, and, yes, basically acting like the person monitoring the situation.
I can do Imagine the really useful version of this bar being a kind of methadone for my own information addiction. I can do Imagine a space filled with other people who are hopelessly addicted to doomscrolling, like me, but we’re all looking at information screens instead of our phones, and at each other, too.
I can imagine a lot of cool things, but are they something Polymarket will implement with the grand opening of the Situation Room? I wouldn’t bet on it.
