American golfers have dominated the PGA Championship for the past decade, but whose responsibility is it to stop that run continuing this week at Aronimink Golf Club?
Each of the last 10 winners of the Wanamaker Trophy has come from the United States with world No. 1 Scotty Scheffler Returns as defending champion after a five-shot victory at Quail Hollow Club last year.
Scheffler is the pre-tournament favorite to defend his title and record his fifth major win in as many seasons, after finishing runner-up at The Masters last month and finishing second in each of his next two PGA Tour appearances.
Bryson DeChambeau Scheffler, who has finished as runner-up in the last two PGA Championships and Xander Schauffele is challenging for a second win at the event two years from his first major title, both potentially challenge Scheffler for a major win.
Jimmy Walker (2016), Justin Thomas (2017, 2022), Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019, 2023) and Phil Mickelson (2021) have also won the PGA Championship during the American’s 10-year streak of success, with plenty of controversy to extend that run in Pennsylvania.
Another US PGA Championship win ahead?
Scheffler’s cumulative score in majors since the start of 2022 is 30 shots better than anyone else, with the 29-year-old’s dominance in recent seasons giving him a chance to complete a career Grand Slam at the US Open next month.
Jordan Spieth can also follow Rory McIlroy Entering the Grand Slam club with victory this week, his 10th attempt to win his elusive Major, although he remains outside the world top 50 and has not been ranked in the worldwide top 10 since last June.
Former Ryder Cup player Chris Wood said, “He’s not trending, but I would love to see Spieth win a Grand Slam.” Sky Sports Golf Podcast. “He takes you on a roller-coaster ride with his golf, but it’s entertaining, and I think he gives great insight to the people watching.
“After the form he showed over those few years, where he was competing in almost every major tournament, he almost deserved a career Grand Slam. The PGA set-up probably isn’t exactly suited to his game, but who knows if he can move up in the putter. He may have a chance, but it’s a long shot!”

world no 3 cameron young The Players and the Cadillacs have already won championships this season, while former FedExCup champion Patrick Cantlay is showing signs of form and is in search of a first major title.

A European winner in Aronimink?
Australia’s Jason Day was the last international winner of this major, defeating Spieth at Whistling Straits in 2015, while McIlroy is a two-time winner of the Wanamaker Trophy and one of only three Europeans to lift the trophy.
McIlroy won the 2012 and 2014 editions before completing a Grand Slam at The Masters last April, ending an 11-year major drought, then defended his title last month and now hopes to become the first player since Jordan Spieth to win the first two majors in a calendar year.
“McIlroy is a dynamic player and after talking to him, he loves the golf course (Aronimink),” Sky Sports’ Wayne ‘Radar’ Riley said Sunday. “It (the course) is detailed and I know how much he is looking forward to it.
“I think he will be very difficult to beat and I would be surprised if he is not seriously in the hunt on Sunday afternoon.”

“(Tommy) Fleetwood, (Shane) Lowry, (Jon) Rahm, (Matt) Fitzpatrick, (Justin) Rose, (Bob) McIntyre – there are a lot of them (European contenders),” the 2002 champion Rich Beam tells Sky Sports Golf Podcast. “You just go back and look at past Ryder Cup teams and go down the list.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see a leaderboard with different flags other than the Americans on Sunday. I think this golf course will allow that and I think we’ll see a lot of guys fighting to get this win.”
