Poe Dameron’s line, 15 minutes into the film, seems like a hilarious and perhaps unintentional admission that this story doesn’t follow anything. Furthermore, it is presented with so much excitement that it has become one of the Internet’s favorite memes, especially with the ability to subvert “Palpatine” to anything you like. Interestingly, and perhaps not at all surprising, the man who came up with this line, Oscar Isaac, recently admitted that “somehow, Palpatine came back” was captured in reshoots.
“They were reshoots. We had to reshoot,” Isaacs said. happy sad confused podcast. “Because when I look at it, I’m like, ‘This wig is great…’ But yeah, man, these are like those surgical strikes where you come in, [they’re] Scrambling, trying to get everything right. And I think it was like a new connection in the end. So there was a lot of ebb and flow in that whole thing. But if you had asked me at that moment, would I have thought that was going to happen [chuckles] I wouldn’t have known that line.
He added, “Hey man, I’m committed to the upset, that’s for sure.” Here is the clip.
Oscar Isaac is the best, and this line, as silly as it is, is also the best. Thanks to the opening crawl, the audience knows that Palpatine is back, but the Resistance doesn’t necessarily have that information. And they certainly don’t have any logical explanation for it. So, “somehow” seems like an extremely obvious, easy way of casually dropping this little detail that the most evil creature in the galaxy, thought to be dead for decades, is now back.
However, this revelation takes us by surprise. How is it possible that this was a reshoot? This is very important information. The whole reason everyone is so desperate to fight and win right now is because of Palpatine’s return. Did the movie forget to tell the rebellion about Palpatine at that point? Otherwise why would this line need to be added later? That part of this mystery we will probably never know. But either way, it’s a wonderful piece of trivia about one of the most infamous moments ever. star wars History.
