OpenAI’s head of ChatGPT says posts appearing to show in-app ads are ‘not real or not ads’

At least according to OpenAI, those may not actually be ads you’re seeing on ChatGPT. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, clarified confusion about potential ads that may appear with AI chatbots. In a post on X, Turley said, “There are no live tests for ads” and “Any screenshots you see are either real or not ads.” The OpenAI executive’s clarification comes after another post by former

OpenAI’s Daniel McAuley responded to the post, arguing that it is not an advertisement, but an example of the app integration the company announced in October. However, the company’s chief research officer, Mark Chen, also responded on

“We have discontinued such suggestions as we improve model accuracy,” Chen wrote on X.

There is still a lot of uncertainty about whether OpenAI will serve ads on ChatGPT, but in November, someone discovered code in a beta version of the ChatGPT app on Android that contained multiple mentions of ads. Even in Turley’s post dismissing the inclusion of live ads, the OpenAI executive said that “if we move forward with ads, we will take a thoughtful approach.” Turley also posted that “People trust ChatGPT and everything we do will be designed to respect that.”
