Everyone has at least one bad breakup that they would prefer to forget. For Olivia Rodrigo’s character on Saturday Night Live, that breakup was very much front and center.
The sketch finds Rodrigo at a party, face to face with a recent ex, whom he is determined to make jealous. Her solution is to recruit the perfectly nice, totally game guy standing next to her, played by Tommy Brennan. A solid plan, all things considered.

Her ex-husband, played by Ben Marshall, has exactly the same idea. Unfortunately, the woman he recruited for his scheme ends up being played by Ashley Padilla. So, while Rodrigo and his innocent pretend date actually have a lovely time, the former’s night comes close to a minor psychological crisis. Padilla has a special gift for playing characters that exist slightly outside the bounds of normal human behavior, and this sketch is a demonstration of exactly that.
